Ann Miller Carpenter Obituary

Ann Miller Carpenter died Tuesday, April 27, 1993 at her residence.
Service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 29, at First Baptist Church with Dr. Jerold McBride officiating. Burial will be at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens, directed by Johnson Funeral Home.
Ann was born May 17, 1943, in Snyder, Texas, the only child of Morris and Willena Miller, longtime ranch families of Borden County, Texas.
She was married to Tom Carpenter and they have two daughters, Cara Willena and Julie Ann.
Ann attended school through her freshman year in Fluvanna, Texas, and won many honors in school and 4-H. In 1957, her family moved to Medina, Bandera County, Texas, where she attended high school.
She received a bachelor of arts and master's degree from Southwest Texas State University and taught at Southwest Texas. She received her doctorate at the University of Texas at Austin.
In 1970, she became an associate professor of English at Angelo State University where she taught until 1976. She and her husband owned Tom Carpenter, Realtor.
Ann was a member of the Texas Folklore Society and served on the Resolution Commission from 1975-1976. She was also a counselor for the commission in 1975. Ann served on the Texas Joint English Commission, District 15, in 1973.
Since 1973, she has been a member of the American Studies Association of Texas, Modern Language Association, Texas Association of College Teachers, Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Tau Delta, Angelo State University Affirmative Action Plan, Green Historical Society, Poetry Society, and Las Hermanas Study Club. She was also a member of the Suzuki Society and had served as president. She was a member of First Baptist Church.
Ann had many honors bestowed on her. She received the American Folklore Award. In 1976, she was honored in the prestigious book, "Outstanding Young Women of America." Further accomplishments of this fine lady can be found in the book "Personalities of the South." She won first prize in the 1969 Folklore Society Competition. In 1973, she received a research grant from Angelo State University.
Ann was an accomplished author of many books, publications, and periodicals. She was currently working on a book entitled "Life and Times of Bashful Brother Oswald," lifetime sideman of Roy Acuff and dear friend of the Carpenter family.
Ann was also an accomplished artist, bestowing gifts of her labor to her friends. Also being an accomplished musician, and because of her love and knowledge of music, she served as an inspiration for her daughter, Julie.
Ann is survived by her loving and caring husband, Tom; two daughters, Cara Willena and Julie Ann; one grandson, Kyle Morris, and one granddaughter, Chelsea Raelynn; her parents, Morris and Willena Miller; her uncle and aunt, Floyd and Dorothy Wyatt of Bandera; her aunt, Mildred Bond of Brookesmith; her father-in-law, Tom Carpenter, Sr. and his wife Faye, of Medina; mother in law Mrs. Ralph Cameron, Jr., of Corpus Christi; sister-in-law Lisa Strickhausen of Corpus Christi; and brother-in-law, George Strickhausen IV of Corpus Christi.
Ann will be missed by her special friends, Russell, Kristie and Bobbie Reed, Binnie and Kenneth Dierschke, Sheree Comer, Wilbert and Vina Bruton, Wanda Hudman, Paula Woyton, Lyndel and Janet Vaught, and Neal McAuley.

Pallbearers will be Russell Reed, Bob King, Joe Kitts, Jim Rollins, Kenneth Dierschke, and Jeff Simmons.
Honorary pallbearers are George Chestnut, B.R. "Pete" Kirby (Bashful Brother Oswald), and Roy Acuff's Smoky Mountain Boys.
